I have just commenced reading Dr Peter Vardy’s “Being Human – Fulfilling Genetic and Spiritual Potential”. I am completely enthralled in his ideas. He makes an interesting comment about the lack of security and order in the world which is driving people to fundamentalism.
Vardy talks about the use of “enhancement genetic engineering” (along the lines of Gattaca) to eliminate defects. However, he also discusses the spiritual side of what it means to be human, challenging Christian views in the process. The book has an Aristotelian flavour to it, promoting ethics as a way of fulfilling human potential.
And for those of you Essendon supporters who think that Number 19 has left the domain of Australian Rules Football to take up a post as a writer, do not despair, the Peter Vardy I am referring to is not the same man as your beloved footballer (but, hey, did you really think an Australian Rules Football player was capable of stringing together more than a few monosyllabic sentences together to form such a brilliant philosophical work of literary art?).
Peter Vardy the Philosopher is Vice Principal of Heythrop College, London where he lectures in Philosophy of Religion.
